“What we call little things are merely the causes of great things; they are the beginning, the embryo, and it is the point of departure which, generally speaking, decides the whole future of an existence.” (Henri Frederic Amiel)

Sweet Honey on the Rock
This was the painting that revealed to me the difficulty in painting faces (or portraits) in a small oil painting with loose brush-strokes. Lesson learned: you can't paint the face with fine detail and fussy brushstrokes, or it looks inconsonant with the rest of the painting. So how do you paint a face with loose strokes and broad definition and still give the impression of a face? Obviously, I did not solve the question with this painting. This is supposed to be my adorable husband, seated on some riprap on a jetty. It's a pretty good likeness of everything except, well, the face. Which is kind of important. (No. 14, 6x8", on Raymar canvas panel, Sept. 6, 2012)
