First Stage: Monterey Sailboat painting

While in Monterey during our California excursion this summer, I took photos of a bunch of kids taking sailing lessons, zipping their J-Boats around in a marina in Monterey.  The scene reminded me of some of the maritime impressionist paintings we saw in San Francisco.  This painting will be based on one of those photos.  As usual, the first stage of a painting, for me, is simply a "drawing" painted in a dark tone (burnt umber, usually mixed with ultramarine blue) on a thin orange background.  Stage two -- the underpainting in dark tones -- will be posted soon!
